In 2010 John and I had a mini break in the Lake District, staying next to a farm in the middle of nowhere. On our last day we went up to ‘Surprise View’ which overlooks Derwentwater, and John asked me to marry him. I’d thought he’d been a bit possessive over the backpack while weContinue reading “Time out”

Katie on school
I wrote a couple of weeks ago that my application for an EHC assessment for Katie was rejected (on the basis that she’s doing fine academically – no mention of social or emotional difficulties). I have put in an appeal and am now waiting on the outcome of that. As some additional evidence I satContinue reading “Katie on school”
Thinking ahead
So….secondary school is a topic that’s on my mind a lot at the moment. Katie will be starting secondary school in September 2023 so there’s still a fair bit of time to go, but we will need to apply to whichever school she ends up going to in October this year. That still gives usContinue reading “Thinking ahead”
New beginnings
Katie, Alice and Matthew have all finished their first full week back at school. Katie has moved to her new school now, Alice finished infants last year and has moved into the juniors, and Matthew has started school for the first time. It was very reassuring to see that Katie was actually excited to startContinue reading “New beginnings”
Spare the rod spoil the child
There are a few things recently that I’ve mentioned in passing to friends or family of decisions we’ve made with Katie which have had a bit of a mixed reaction. I think sometimes me and John can struggle with how we parent her because we are bringing her up in a different way to howContinue reading “Spare the rod spoil the child”
We’re moving school!
We got confirmation over half term that Katie has been accepted at the school we applied to, so she will definitely be starting there in September. She will be in a year 5/6 mixed class of 15 kids including her. There are only 47 kids in the entire school, compared to her current school whereContinue reading “We’re moving school!”
A mountain or a molehill?
Yesterday morning Katie did not want to go to school. This is nothing unusual but I asked her if there was anything particular that was bothering her and she said one of the boys in her class had told the teacher she was bullying him. I asked if he had any reason to say that,Continue reading “A mountain or a molehill?”
School support (or not)
I’m eternally grateful to Amanda for suggesting we should go and get Katie assessed. I hate to think where we would be right now if it wasn’t for her. I can’t deny there are negatives to Katie’s diagnosis – I don’t think any parent would choose for their child to face difficulties in life ifContinue reading “School support (or not)”
Getting an assessment
Having been advised that to get a referral to CAMHS I would need input from school or the GP, I went to the GP. I did a ‘brain dump’ of Katie when she was at her best and Katie when she was struggling, wrote it all down and asked him to read it, because IContinue reading “Getting an assessment”
I’m sure it’s nothing, but….
This really isn’t intended to be a blog about autism or about me being an ‘autism mum’ – because I’m not autistic and I’m Katie’s mum not an autism mum. I also have a long way to go in learning more about autism and supporting Katie. This is literally just to document some of theContinue reading “I’m sure it’s nothing, but….”
